Beetlejuice Dad

Beetlejuice was just one of those movies I watched over and over again. My favorite scene was the part where Lydia meets Beetlejuice for the first time in the attic. He was leaning against the strip club's railing in the town model. As he was talking to her, he caught a huge cockroach with his hand and ate its head off! I remember going "ewww! ewww!" and then chuckling my head off like little kids do.

One day, my dad set a no-kill cockroach trap in the garage and caught one! It was big and black and squirmy and disgusting. He ran outside into our back driveway with cockroach in his hand as I chased him. Just as quick, he stopped in his steps, turned to his profile, and held the cockroach over his mouth as it squirmed and ticked its skinny legs around. At this point, I can't remember if it actually went in his mouth or if he slid it off to the side to make it look like it had gone in his mouth. All I remember is that I screamed.

I screamed and screamed and couldn't stop screaming. I'm pretty sure the screams were shrieking and I'm quite certain they turned into an all-out cry. I remember my dad laughing and my mom yelling at him from the kitchen window and my sisters running out to see what the matter was.

In gasps of interrupted cries I said "he [gasp] ate [gasp] it [gasp]" as I pointed at him with a limp arm and my mouth wide open in a frown, sad saliva dripping from my lips. I recall my sister Stephanie trying to explain that whatever had just happened was over and that everything was going to be ok.

Honestly, it was so real to me back then and that memory is so vivid in my mind today that I'm not entirely sure if he didn't eat it. If he did, that's pretty gross - even for a prank, Dad!
